Which vehicles had a D44 rear end w/ 5x4.5 bolt pattern? When I do an axle swap I'm only gonna do the rear end so I need to keep the same bolt pattern on my YJ. From what I've heard the Ford 8.8s & D44s out of Scout IIs have a 5x5.5 bolt pattern, so they're out. Do I have any other choices besides the D44s out of 87-89(?) XJs & MJs (which are almost impossible to find)? Thanks.

Ford 8.8" out of a late model Exploder. Strong as a D44, if not stronger, disc brakes, probably 4.10's and a Trac-Lock too.

most D44s that use 5 on 5.5" can be easily switched to 5 on 4.5" You can also get wheel spacers/adapters that will do this for you
excellent choice on the 58" wide scout D44 check out some older chrysler cars too... I believe that some of them used a D44 rearend, and they might be 5 on 4.5" (like the 80s new yorker/diplomat/5th avenue, all basically the same car) they were also spring under... might be a bolt-in?

Thanks guys.
I thought Ford 8.8s out of the Explorers had a 5x5.5 bolt pattern. Since they don't, that seems like a good choice. Still stuck between gettin the Ford 8.8" or D44 from a Scout II.

I'm not sure what the wheel bolt pattern is but Isuzu Rodeo's came with Dana 44's. You could check with some one on a Isuzu board they could probably fill you in on the b wheel bolt pattern.

The Ford 8.8 is really stronger than a D44 in just about every way.
It is a 31 spline shaft vs. the 30 spline on the D44. It has a 8.8" ring gear vs. the 8.5" on the D44. I'm not sure about tube diameter and wall thickness, but I know Ford uses the exact same axle on their F-150s. It is also definitely a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. Disc brake versions are available on the post '94 models. Be wary of the Ranger 8.8 though, they only recently went to a 31 spline version. They all look the same from the outside but the early Ranger 8.8s were only 28 spline. Explorer swap is a good swap.

So if you swap you dana 35 with the 8.8, what else do you have to do it besides welding the leaf brackets? Are they the same width?

Also, regarding the 8.8", you will need new u-bolts, new u-bolt plates for on top of the leafs, new custom e-brake cables, and an adapter for the driveshaft/pinion yoke. MountainOffRoad (MORE) has an 8.8" install kit with everything you'll need.

So if you have a 8.25" rear you don't need the driveshaft adapter.

Does the 8.25" use 1330's or 1310's like the other axles? D44's use 1310's, so I can't imagine the 8.25" would use something else...
MORE sells a special 1310 yoke for the 8.8", the info on their site leads me to believe the 8.8" comes stock with a flange on the pinion, not a yoke.

8.8's use a flange, and according to that site the stock explorer adapter fits a 1330 u-joint. And also according to that the 8.25" uses 1330's. Doesn't Spicer make a 1310 to 1330 adapter u-joint? Then this could be used with the XJ driveshaft and explorer flange to yoke adapter. Can't find anything to confirm or deny the 1330 for the 8.25".

8.8's use either a 1310 or 1330, 1330 is more common. NAPA makes a 1310 adapter yoke for the 8.8 flange. This is cheaper than the 1310-1330 u-joint and can be found locally unlike the MORE unit (unless you live near Glenwood Springs, CO ). No info on the 8.25" u-joint though.

does anybody have concrete info on which XJs might use a 1330 U-joint?
I've got a 1330 u-bolt yoke for my D44 that I'd like to use, and if i can grab a driveshaft that fits the XJ, and fits the 1330 joint... that would kick a$$

Asked the question there, so the answer's on it's way. If the 8.25" really does use 1330 u-joints then a driveshaft from an XJ with AW4 and an 8.25" should be longer than the shaft that you have (lower pinion of the 8.25). Could help keep the splines in the t-case with your lift.

Does it matter which year Explore as long as its '94 or newer? Am I correct in assuming that all Explores came with 8.8? Sounds like the 8.8 is a good option, especially due to parts avaiablility.

all explorers are 31 spline but pre 94 have drums and are more common with 4.10 gearing. I have also heard bout that with the ds ujoints. The easiest solution is to just grab and adapter plate from a ranger while at the yard or off of an ford solid axle car like a lincoln or a mustang
