Oh, too bad. I was hoping to see some good ideas. I don't like any aftermarket bumpers for the CTD, all way too huge. I want a winch mounted nice and clean inside like on a Power Wagon, but I don't think its possible. Thanks Anyway!

Check out the diesel PowerWagon that Skunkwerks built. The 12k winch on that stuck partway through the stock bumper.....not much space to work with with the intercooler and all that crap in there. Why not just do a multi-mount so the winch doesn't get trashed being in the front of your daily driver?

It's actually my best friend's truck but the shoe still fits. I may get one come spring and it may also get stacks, I don't know.

Lol, no. It's still sitting in need of it's new shock mounts to be finished among other things. I decided to lower the whole thing about an inch. I'm finally finishing up other projects on the house, but the big thing right now is money. This is the only thing I've got for it recently. Oil filter relocation block that should give me more clearance for my front suspension.

Thats the only thing I've got from him so far, but I'm very impressed so far. There are some other goodies that I would like to get from him before too long.

So I really haven't done much of anything productive on this thing for a while but I'm plugging away here and there. I'm kinda burnt out and frustrated at this point cuz there's just so damn much left to do. I've been going out and having a TON of much-needed fun so far this year so the Jeep's kinda been on the backburner.

The latest work has been on the rear wheelwells and I'm having a tough time finding something I like. I pushed the rear axle back a bit and without having to add sheetmetal and make things a general PITA the wheelwells are gonna be pretty big. Making them look good has proven to be tougher than I expected. There'll be a tube welded in to form the wheelwell and give it its shape and strength. Here's what I've come up with so far:
First idea using 1.5" tube:

I think it looks like crap so I set it aside and stared at it a bunch trying to come up with better ideas.

The only other decent idea I came up with was 1.75" tube for the wider radius, using a simpler shape more like the factory wheelwell:

Thoughts? I think it looks decent. Having the front and rear portions at less steep angles might look a little better but would require adding sheetmetal to the front and making things a pain. Any other ideas are welcome.

I've also been bitten by the wheeling bug again and have gone 4 times already this year, 3 times with my daily driver truck. Here are some pics from those runs just for the hell of it:

Even in snow with bald 35s, D44=fail

Although I may or may not have had the steering cranked while hammering on it in 4 low with a 360 providing power, and a few too many beers providing stupidity

A buddy's lifted IFS 1/2 ton, bigger fail:

Another trip I just rode along for:

Good times
On that note, since the Scrambler is so far off and I love wheeling so much I've had an idea lately. My friends and I go on lots of small wheeling trips and go to local mud bogs 2-3 times a month all summer. It's a blast but it'd be better if I weren't always a spectator. I'm about to buy a new DD/tow rig and not sure if I can get much of anything for my current truck. I'm seriously considering building a bigger suspension for it, throwing some welded 1 tons under it, borrowing the 41s off the Scrambler, and having a trailrig to enjoy while I take my time finishing the Jeep. I could get it done in a month or so for under $4k.....pretty tempting. I shouldn't spend the money but it'd be awesome to have a rig to enjoy in the meantime.

i vote option B hands down. the 1.5 has too many bends and looks cluttered. now if you could find someone with a tube roller, now that would be

I like it. A lot better than the multi-bend first version.

Yeah it definitely takes some practice to get the hang of tube bending! The great thing about steel though, you can always add or remove some to get it to the size and shape you want.

For gawd's sake, just quit crying and finish the damn jeep. You're not gonna be happy until it's done. Anything else is gonna be a waste of time and money that could have been invested in the 8.

Yeah, i'm not to pissed since I know I'll be able to hack that peice up and use the smaller peices somewhere else.

Any projected date ya plan on having this beast done?

No whining, just frustration resulting in lack of motivation. It comes down to immediate gratification(simple 1 ton swap on the Dodge) versus waiting till I finish the Scrambler. It make sense pretty much everywhere but financially.

Or depending what the piece is you could just cut some out of the center, sleeve it, and weld it back together since you already got the bends and stuff right.

I've had lots of projected dates for this project but it's changed a lot obviously. Late last year I was planning to bust asss and get it done by Memorial Day 2010 but since I haven't done jack to it in the past 2 months that's not gonna happen. At this point I don't really care when cuz I've been having so much fun doing other stuff instead of locked in the garage by myself. I should get it done this summer sometime but I know that once the weather gets nice again I'll be out and about even more than I am now. I'm hoping to buy a house later this year too, so it may even get pushed back till after that depending on how I allot my time and money.....another reason why having a toy in the meantime might be nice. I should get it done and enjoy it before the house thing, but I've already pushed that back a lot too. Too many options, and not enough of them get me in a completed Scrambler anytime soon.

For the right price everything is for sale

Honestly, if someone offered me near what I have into it as far as parts and materials I'd probably sell it. Then I'd buy a finished or near finished simpler and cheaper project and add my own touches to it, just to get out wheeling sooner and get back a bunch of the money I've blown on the project. I've already proven to myself what I'm capable of, now I wanna wheel and have more money to put into more important stuff!! Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up on it by any means, but I'd also entertain the idea of "simplifying" things if the opportunity arose.

Agreed. Sounds like your motivation is lacking; build another rig and it will seriously be lacking and then you'll just end up with a Ram wheeling rig cobbled together from parts off the CJ and an almost finished CJ that you'll never get 2/3 of your investment back out of. Buckle down get that Jeep done!

Edit: And I like the second option for the rear wheelwells, unless you can find someone with a tube roller

It is my opinion that only a fool would divert time and resources from their CJ-8 build to swap tons into a Dodge 1500 so that they could go wheeling.

I feel your pain. I'm in the same boat. After building the first Jeep I had it almost seemed like it would be easier to buy someones rig that was already built and let them loose 1/2 to 2/3 of their initial investment building it. I bought my 1995 YJ for $8k and put another $8k (receipts) into it and it still had 1/2 ton axles and a stock motor. That's why I'm to the point that I'll strip my rig and have a shop help me with the build. I really want to enjoy wheeling my Jeep this spring/summer/fall rather then slaving away in the garage building it by myself. I have VERY little into my current Jeep so having someone else help wont be as big of an issue as it would with some Jeep that I owed $7-10k to the bank.
